Programs and ToursCan the Revolution Liberate Women, Too?Bothaina Kamel, the first woman presidential candidate in Egypt, television anchor and pro-democracy activist, will give the Women's Studies Department and Institute for Research on Women and Gender 2012 Motorola Lecture. Since the late 1980s Kamel has addressed issues of women's rights, human rights, and corruption in her high profile position. She is deeply connected to the solidarity and human rights campaigns of peaceful protest and organizing in Egypt. Despite harassment and beatings by government and military authorities in the last decade, Kamel continues her brave work for human rights and real democracy. The Motorola Lecture, established in 2001 with support from the Motorola Foundation, aims to expose UM students to journalists who address important issues concerning women and gender and to engage them in discussion about ways the media can reframe the public understanding of complex issues.
