Programs and ToursQuartex: The Canterbury House Jazz EnsembleQuartex (Matt Endahl--piano; Matt Setzler--saxophone; Rob Avsharian--drums; and Andrew Kratzat--bass) is the house band at Canterbury House, the Episcopal student center for the University of Michigan. During the school year, the band plays for Canterbury House's weekly Jazz Mass. The liturgical music, selected weekly by Endahl and Rev. Reid Hamilton, is drawn from a wide variety of traditions, ranging from African-American gospel music, traditional Episcopal hymns and African praise music, to songs by Bob Marley, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Johnny Cash, the Dead Kennedys, and more. This monthly series, curated by UM Associate Professor Adam Unsworth, presents outstanding local jazz artists in an intimate setting. This series is made possible by the Doris Sloan Memorial Fund.
